Research and creative activities are an integral component of
the education undergraduates receive at UCI, regardless of their
career choice. UROP provides funding in support of UCI faculty-mentored
undergraduate research and creative projects. Students can apply
for funding by submitting a proposal during two separate Calls
for Proposals in the Fall and Spring Quarters of each school
The Calls are announced on this Web site and distributed to faculty
members and the undergraduate counseling offices. Students will
have approximately one month from the announcement to submit their
proposals. All UCI undergraduate students from all disciplines
and majors who are participating in a research or creative project
with a UCI faculty mentor and are in good academic standing are
eligible to respond to the current Call
Proposals should be prepared by the student applicant and jointly
submitted by the student and the faculty mentor. This program funds
a variety of projects with grants up to $1,000 for individual projects,
although higher amounts can be awarded for group projects. The
UROP Faculty Advisory Board reviews proposals and makes the funding
Funds can be used to support such expenditures as the purchase
of materials and supplies, research-related travel, and the costs
incurred in the presentation of research projects or creative activities.
These funds cannot support major hardware purchases, salaries or
stipends, or travel expenditures only. Proposals that do not require
funding or are already receiving adequate funding from departmental
or other sources may be submitted for the UROP Honorary Fellowship.
Students supported by UROP must adhere to UCI's
research conduct rules dealing with health and environmental
issues, research ethics, use of humans as experimental subjects,
care of laboratory animals, as well as patents and copyrights.
Additional research conduct guidelines and appropriate
forms are available at the following Web site: www.rgs.uci.edu.
