Call for Proposals |

|
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program
(UROP) Fall Call for Proposals has been announced with a deadline
of November 3 , 2008. UCI undergraduate students
from all disciplines who are currently involved in faculty-mentored
undergraduate research or creative projects are encouraged to apply.
Proposals are submitted online. Be prepared to provide information about the undergraduate researchers
and their faculty mentors, and additional details related to the
proposed project. You must also upload (as separate files) the
proposal, and a personal statement for each undergraduate group
member, as applicable.
Before you start the online submission process, please make sure
you have the following information:
-
For each undergraduate researcher directly
involved in the proposed project, you need to provide his/her
name, UCI student ID number, major(s), title and number of units
for each research-related course he/she is enrolled in, expected
graduation date, educational goals, career goals, research interests
and prior research experience (if any), current mailing address,
phone number, e-mail address, and a personal statement (as a separate file). The personal statement outlines the
student’s background, future plans, and how the research
experience will impact his/her education and future career.
-
For each faculty member directly involved in mentoring the proposed
project, you need to provide his/her name, home department, e-mail
address, phone number, and UCI address.
-
Details about the proposed project, including:
title of the project, IRB or IACUC approval and protocol numbers
(if applicable), funding request total, other funding you might
have received in support of this project, and a Department Accounting
Contact's name, phone number, and e-mail address. You will also
be asked to upload an electronic version of the proposal, which
includes a topic or thesis statement, the background or introduction,
the objective or significance of your project, methods, expected
results, specific responsibilities of the student(s), project
timeline, and budget details and justification. With your permission,
we download a copy of your transcript; therefore, you do not
need to provide it to us. For more details on how to prepare
a proposal, please review the Proposal
Guidelines; for examples, review the Sample
Proposals.
Please note
that only one submission is needed per project, regardless of the number of student researchers. A confirmation
is sent to the undergraduate researcher(s) and faculty
mentor(s) via e-mail once the submission has been received. This confirmation
provides a secure link for students and faculty mentors to access
and update the submission. In addition, faculty mentors are asked
to upload one letter of recommendation per project, which evaluates
the student's performance to date and capacity to complete the proposed
activities.

Proposals are evaluated based on the intellectual
merit of the student’s research, a complete application, the level
of support from the faculty mentor, student transcripts, and available
funding. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of Fall
or Spring Quarter, depending on the cycle applied for, and may begin
to make expenditures immediately or cover expenses incurred during
the quarter of submission.
Your award letter indicates the method by which
the grant is awarded. Funds are either transferred to a departmental
account or awarded directly to you as a stipend. For awards transferred
to departmental accounts, please contact your faculty mentor and
the appropriate departmental business manager to expend the funds
for your project. If you submitted a Fall Proposal, then all funds
must be expended by June. If you submitted a Spring Proposal, all
funds must be expended by the end of the following June.
A final report on the project activities and findings
is required of all UROP Fellows. Instead of a report, Fellows may
submit a paper for possible publication in The
UCI Undergraduate Research Journal. All UROP Fellows are
required to present at the following year's UCI
Undergraduate Research Symposium. For more examples or more
help, browse through some Sample
Proposals and our Researcher
Handbook.
