Fall 2003 Call for Proposals

See the Proposal Guidelines (PDF), which provide specific information on each section. The proposal packet must include:

  1. Standardized Proposal Cover Sheet (Coming Soon)
  2. A written proposal should include a topic or thesis statement, the background or introduction, the objective or significance of your project, methods, expected results, specific responsibilities of the student(s) and the project's timeline.
  3. An itemized budget for the project. Items that ARE COVERED include chemicals, supplies, animals, mailing, mileage, paying human subjects, travel, presentation, or related costs. Items that are NOT COVERED include major hardware purchases, salaries and stipends, travel expenditures only, or items that can be borrowed or rented at a much lower cost.
  4. A letter of support from a faculty sponsor, evaluating the student's performance to date and capacity to complete the proposed activities.
  5. A personal statement evaluating your research experience and its impact on your education, information on your background, unique qualifications, the relationship that your research has to your future career, and why you are a good candidate. If this is a group project, each student must write a personal statement.
  6. Evidence of the appropriate IRB or IACUC submission or approval (if your research involves human subjects or the use of live animals). Students supported by UROP must adhere to UCI's research conduct rules dealing with health and environmental issues, research ethics, use of humans as experimental subjects, care of laboratory animals, as well as patents and copyrights. Additional research conduct guidelines and appropriate forms are available from UCI's Research and Graduate Studies Web site: www.rgs.uci.edu.

The Process

Proposals are evaluated based on the intellectual merit of the student’s research, a complete application, the level of support from the faculty mentor, student transcripts, and available funding. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of Fall or Spring Quarter, depending on the cycle you have applied for, and may begin to make expenditures immediately or cover expenses you incurred during the quarter of submission.

Your award letter will indicate the method that you will be awarded the grant. Funds will be either transferred to the departmental account that you have indicated on your application or will be awarded directly to you as a stipend. For awards that will be transferred to departmental accounts, please contact your faculty mentor and the appropriate departmental business manager to expend the funds for your project. If you submitted a Fall Proposal, then all funds must be expended by June. If you submitted a Spring Proposal, all funds must be expended by the end of the following June.

A final report on the project activities and findings is required of all UROP Fellows. Instead, students can submit a paper for possible publication in The UCI Undergraduate Research Journal. A student is also required to present at the following year's UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium. For more examples or more help, browse through some Sample Proposals and our Researcher Handbook.
