UROP Research Abroad Fellowship
The UROP Research Abroad Fellowship recognizes research or creative projects conducted abroad by UCI undergraduates under the guidance of UCI faculty, or projects resulting directly from an undergraduate's experience abroad. Proposed projects must be submitted online and in response to the regular UROP Call for Proposals.
Like the standard UROP research proposal, a proposal for a UROP Research Abroad Fellowship should include the background and objective of the research project, the project's design and feasibility, the student's specific responsibilities, the project's timeline, and a detailed budget with justifications. UCI faculty mentors are asked to upload one letter of recommendation per project, which should evaluate the student's performance to date and capacity to complete the proposed activities. If the research involves human subjects or the use of live vertebrate animals, the appropriate IRB or IACUC protocol number is required. Please refer to http://www.research.uci.edu/compliance/index.html for guidelines and appropriate forms.
In addition, to be considered for a UROP Research Abroad Fellowship, please also elaborate within your proposal on the following:
- How you will conduct your project in an international setting or how your project will result directly from your study or experience abroad
- The name and location of the laboratory or other research setting in which you will be conducting research and the university or other institution with which it is affiliated
- The name, title, and contact information of faculty mentor(s) who will be located at the international site and who will supervise your research activities there
- How you have communicated with your international faculty mentor(s) about research conduct rules in the international setting and how your project will comply with those rules
Proposals will be reviewed by the UROP Faculty Advisory Board. Based on its recommendations, UROP will fund a varied set of projects, with requests up to $1,000 for individual projects, or $2,500 for group projects that involve multiple UCI undergraduate students. As applicable, awards are contingent upon the proposed project meeting standard campus policy and guidelines related to risk in an international setting.
Funds can be used to support such expenditures as the purchase of materials and supplies, research-related travel, and the costs incurred in the presentation of research or creative activities. These funds cannot support major hardware purchases, salaries or stipends, travel unrelated to research, or fees for participating in an abroad experience. Proposals requiring no funding, or receiving adequate funding from departmental or other sources, may be submitted for a UROP Honorary Fellowship. Fellows also have the option to submit a Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) proposal in the spring of each year to request a SURP Grant/Fellowship and funding in support of their time and efforts conducting research during the summer.
UROP Research Abroad Fellows are required to present their research at the UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium, held in May of each academic year. If their physical presence at the Symposium is not possible, then they may submit their manuscripts for possible publication in The UCI Undergraduate Research Journal.
