ID-SURE Call for Proposals |
 |
|
The Inter-Disciplinary Research Summer Undergraduate
Research Experience (ID-SURE) Call for Proposals has been announced
with a deadline of March 10, 2008. Non-graduating UCI Undergraduate
students from all disciplines, who will be involved in a faculty-mentored
research or creative project for at least one quarter prior to Summer
2008, are eligible. Please note that if you are involved in a group
project, each undergraduate researcher must submit his or her own ID-SURE Proposal.
Proposals are submitted online by providing appropriate information about the
undergraduate researcher, his/her faculty mentor(s), and additional details related to the
proposed project. Submitters will be asked to upload the
proposal and a personal statement as separate documents.
Before you start the online submission process, please make sure you have the following
information:
-
Your name, UCI student ID number, major(s), title
and number of units for each research-related course you are enrolled in, expected
graduation date, educational goals, career goals, research interests, prior research
experience and duration, current mailing address, phone number, e-mail address, and an
electronic version of your personal statement. A personal statement outlines your
background, future plans, and how the research experience will impact your education and
future career.
For each faculty member directly involved in mentoring the proposed
project, you need to provide his/her name, home department, e-mail address, phone number,
and UCI address.
-
Details about the proposed project,
including: title of the project, IRB or IACUC approval and protocol numbers (if
applicable), stipend request total, and other funding you might have received in support
of this project. You will also be asked to upload an electronic version of the proposal,
which includes an interdisciplinary topic or thesis statement and how it relates to health
promotion and disease prevention, the background or introduction, the objective or
significance of your project including stated hypotheses, methods, expected results,
specific responsibilities of the student, project's timeline, and references. Since the
ID-SURE Fellowship will be provided as a stipend in support of your time and efforts,
there is no need to include an itemized budget. With your permission, we will download a
copy of your transcript; therefore, you do not need to provide it to us. For more details
on how to prepare a proposal, please review the Proposal Guidelines and for examples, review the Sample Proposals.
A confirmation e-mail will be sent to the undergraduate researcher
and faculty mentor(s) once the submission has been received. This confirmation will
provide a secure link that allows students and faculty mentors to access and update
their submission. In addition, faculty mentors will be asked to upload one letter of
recommendation per project, evaluating the student's performance to date and
capacity to complete the proposed activities.

Proposals are evaluated based on the
intellectual merit of the students research, a complete application, level of
support from the faculty mentor, student transcript, and available funding. Successful
applicants will be notified by the end of winter quarter, in time to enroll in the spring
course. For more examples or more help, browse through some Sample Proposals and our Researcher Handbook.
A brief presentation and final written report on the project activities and findings is
required of all ID-SURE Fellows. After the summer, ID-SURE Fellows are encouraged to
continue with their faculty-mentored research and creative activities on a related topic
and present at the following years UCI
Undergraduate Research Symposium.
