Workshops

Journal Submission Workshop
Do you want to get published? This workshop will discuss how you can strengthen the content and format of your paper, and will review guidelines for submitting a publishable paper in The UCI Undergraduate Research Journal.

Practice Your Presentation
Practice! Practice! Practice! Get valuable advice from peers and UROP Advisors on how to perfect your presentation. Attend a practice session and get familiar with the equipment and software available for you to use on the day of the Symposium. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will be in making an outstanding presentation at the Symposium.

Presentation Skills Workshop
Learn to clearly and effectively present the results of your research project in a professional setting. This workshop will cover techniques of making an oral or poster presentation and discuss in detail the schedule of the UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium. Reminder: developing your communication skills should be a priority regardless of what you want to do in the future.

Proposal Writing Workshop
Increase your chances of getting funded by writing a winning proposal. This workshop will discuss required components of a proposal including: background and introduction of your research or creative project, expected results and timeline, itemized budget and references, your personal statement and faculty’s letter of recommendation, and appropriate IRB and IACUC forms. Copies of previously funded proposals will be provided.

Research Opportunities Workshop
Learn how to do your homework and find the appropriate research or creative opportunity on- or off-campus. This workshop will also discuss how UROP can help you in the process of applying and following up with potential mentors. UROP Research Advisors and Fellows will guide you through the many resources available in order to find the right opportunity that matches your interests.

Deadlines

Fall and Spring Calls for Proposals
UROP provides funding for research-related supplies and expenses through two separate Calls for Proposals. The Calls will be announced on the UROP Website and distributed to faculty members, students, and the undergraduate counseling offices. The proposal should be prepared by the student applicant and jointly submitted by the student and a faculty mentor. UROP will fund a varied set of projects, with grants normally less than $1,000.

Journal
The UCI Undergraduate Research Journal, published by UROP, is a compilation of outstanding research papers completed by UCI undergraduate students. Works from all schools and disciplines are included. The UROP Student Editorial Board handles the regulation, initial review of papers, and production of the Journal. Final research papers are judged and chosen by the UROP Faculty Advisory Board. All students involved in faculty-mentored research are encouraged to submit their papers for consideration. Papers are accepted during the Spring Quarter. Guidelines are available in the UROP Office.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)
SURP provides funding for UCI Undergraduates from all disciplines who are conducting summer research projects or creative activities under the guidance of UCI faculty members. The program offers students the opportunity to become immersed in a research topic for a full-time ten-week period or the equivalence of 400 hours. SURP Fellows receive a $3,000 stipend.

Symposium
Sponsored by UROP, the Symposium is an annual event that allows undergraduates the opportunity to present their research results in a professional setting. The day’s activities include oral and poster presentations, student performances, a keynote speaker, roundtable discussions, and an awards ceremony. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate in this celebrated UCI event. The Call for Abstracts is issued during the Winter Quarter. This year’s Symposium will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2004.
