Application Tips & Guidelines

Personal Statement
You must submit a personal statement as part of completing the online application. This statement is an important component of the application, and tells us who you are, why you want to pursue this research, and what impact you expect this experience to have on your future career. Describe your research background, and discuss how it has influenced your education. The personal statement must specifically address all of the SURF-IoT research projects you have selected, why you chose them, your experience relevant to the projects, and how the selected projects will help you meet your long-term education and career goals. Include any other relevant experience that you feel has helped you prepare for the program. Your personal statement should be 2-3 pages, double-spaced, in an MS Word (doc) or Acrobat (pdf) format.
Choosing Your Research Projects
Carefully read through each of the research projects, select, and rank the five that are of the greatest interest to you. Project details are provided within the Research Projects section of this site, including an overview of the facilities you would be working in and the faculty mentor overseeing the project. You are also encouraged to seek out related publications and read faculty-suggested pages to gain more information about each projectís background and goals. SURF-IoT Fellows will be assigned to a single project based on their rankings and selection by faculty mentors.
Two reference names are required for your application. As part of your online application, you will be asked to list information for the two individuals, including their titles, contact information and relationship to you. References may be professors who have worked with you as a research supervisor, academic advisors, course instructors, former employers, or other experienced persons (not related to you) who can speak to your qualifications.
