UROP sponsors The UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium, an annual
event held in May that allows hundreds of undergraduates the opportunity
to present their research results or creative activities in a professional
setting. Any UCI undergraduate student who has conducted research
is invited to submit an application and abstract, during the Call
for Abstracts, which is typically in the Winter Quarter of every
year. UROP and SURP fellows are required to present, however the
Symposium is open to all students. The Symposium also provides the
opportunity for students to attend and learn about the work of their
fellow students, or simply assist to volunteer in organizing the
event. Members of the larger UCI community are also invited to attend.
Poster or Oral Presentations
At the Symposium, students will present their work in either a
poster or oral presentation. Posters will be set up on an easel
duration of the day, and poster presenters will need to be at hand
to answer questions about their project during the Poster Session.
Oral presentations are grouped by related areas of research. Oral
presenters will be allotted 15 minutes for a presentation followed
by a 5-minute question-and-answer period. A faculty moderator will
be coordinating each session and may also facilitate the discussion.
A student volunteer will be assigned to each room to assist presenters
and the faculty moderator.
Performing/Visual Arts Presentations
Most Performing Arts/Visual Arts presentations are considered Oral
Presentations since they are executed in the same format: up to
15 minutes for a performance/presentation, followed by a five-minute
question-and-answer period. Performing arts presentations may include
creative activities in music, dance and theater, and visual arts
presentations can be done in drawing, painting, printmaking, photography,
sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, video, and film. We will try to
schedule performances on stage, or we will have a TV/VCR or tape/CD
player available. A table for artwork displays can be requested
for the poster session as well.
Always exciting is the awards ceremony where the Chancellor's Award
for Excellence in Undergraduate Education will be presented on the
day of the Symposium. An annual award since 1997, the purpose of
the Chancellor's Award is to recognize the meritorious contributions
in support of undergraduate research by one faculty member and the
research accomplishments of one student from each school (student
award recipients need not be presenting at this year's Symposium
to be eligible). Student recipients will receive a certificate and
a small cash award and designated faculty members will also be recognized
with certificates of excellence. Deans of each school, in consultation
with the Associate Dean and the UROP Faculty Advisory Board member
from that school, will select the faculty and student award recipients.
Additionally, one faculty member will receive a substantial award
for the purchase of computer equipment, and the UROP Faculty Advisory
Board will select this award recipient. We invite you to view a
list of these distinguished previous
winners of the Chancellor's Award.
