Welcome to the 11th annual UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium, an event that has become a campuswide tradition representing some of the very best in faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative projects. This year's theme, "Human Discovery: Understanding the Past; Predicting the Future," reflects UCI’s commitment to promoting an interdisciplinary approach to research and analysis, both within and beyond the academy.

I invite you to celebrate with our student scholars as they communicate the fruits of their research journey. Each year, this symposium reminds us of the passion for discovery and the positive impact it has on all of us, specifically on our future leaders as they explore and develop solutions to the challenges of tomorrow. UC Irvine is helping its students to realize their future vision by providing them with some of the best tools, techniques, and skills for further inquiry and continued intellectual growth. Our thanks go to the dedicated faculty mentors who have helped to instill these values and skills in our students.

My appreciation also goes to members of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Team for organizing this symposium and for all their efforts year round in fostering undergraduate research at UCI and beyond. This year also marks the publication of Volume VI of The UCI Undergraduate Research Journal, which is a sampling of undergraduate research projects presented at last year’s symposium. UCI’s combined efforts in support of undergraduate research have become a national model for how a research university can effectively enhance the educational experience of its undergraduates.

To that end, it is my distinct pleasure to sponsor the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research for the eighth consecutive year. This award recognizes the outstanding contributions of a student and faculty member from each school. Along with the entire UCI campus, I offer my heartiest congratulations to this year’s talented award recipients, as well as to all students and faculty participating in the 2004 Undergraduate Research Symposium.

On behalf of the UCI community, I wish everyone an exciting, engaging day of discovery.
