Dear Colleagues and

Welcome
to the 14th annual UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium, an event
that has become a campuswide tradition representing some of the very best in
faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative projects. This year’s theme, “Undergraduate Research: Focus on
Excellence,” reflects the University of California,
Irvine’s commitment to excellence, both within and beyond the academy.
I invite you to celebrate with our student scholars as they share new knowledge,
skills, and ways of thinking that they have discovered through their research
journeys. Each year, the Symposium is a powerful reminder, not only of the
light of discovery, but also of how each new breakthrough provides a building
block for overcoming future challenges. UCI encourages its students and helps
them pursue their dreams by providing superior tools, techniques and skills
for further inquiry and continued intellectual growth. I cannot express enough
my thanks to the dedicated faculty mentors who help instill these values and
skills in our students.
My
appreciation also goes to members of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Program team for organizing this symposium, and for their continuing efforts
in fostering undergraduate research at UCI. This year also marks the
publication of Volume IX of The UCI Undergraduate Research Journal, a
sampling of the most outstanding undergraduate research projects presented at
last year’s Symposium. UCI’s continuing effort to undergraduate research
has become a national model for how a research university can effectively
enhance the educational experience of its undergraduates.
To
further celebrate creativity and research, it is my distinct pleasure to
sponsor the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research for
the eleventh consecutive year. This award recognizes the outstanding
contributions of one student and faculty member from each school. Along with
the entire UCI campus, I offer my congratulations to this year’s talented award recipients, and to all
students and faculty participating in the 2007 Undergraduate Research
Symposium.
I
look forward to experiencing with you the spirit and energy of the student
presenters.

Sincerely,

Michael V. Drake, M.D.
