Welcome from Undergraduate Education
Dear UC Irvine Community Members and Guests:
Welcome to the 22nd annual UC Irvine Undergraduate Research Symposium. This year, UC Irvine commemorates its 50th anniversary, celebrating its “Bright Past, Brilliant Future.” In that same spirit, the theme of today’s event, “Undergraduate Research: Brilliant Future,” recognizes the tremendous impact faculty-mentored undergraduate research projects and creative activities can have on students’ lives and communities. Today’s symposium provides an opportunity for the student presenters to share with us the passion and excitement that has inspired them throughout the research process.
This year’s Symposium has grown to more than 675 projects, presented by more than 1,050 students, mentored by more than 400 faculty. The day’s offerings—oral and poster presentations, dance performances, a keynote address, and presentation of the Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Research—provide an opportunity for you to witness the thriving culture of undergraduate research that plays such an integral part of the UCI undergraduate experience.
Many people have made vital contributions to today’s event. We congratulate the student presenters, whose perseverance has helped carry them through the challenges of their research. We express our deepest thanks to their faculty mentors, whose patient guidance has made their students’ achievements possible. Finally, we wish to recognize the many volunteers who have devoted their time and efforts to making the symposium a success.
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) in the Division of Undergraduate Education assists UC Irvine’s students by facilitating and supporting their involvement in faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative activities. As the organizer of today’s symposium, UROP has provided research assistance and funding to many of today’s presenters. UROP also advises undergraduate students about on- and off-campus research opportunities, and publishes The UCI Undergraduate Research Journal, an annual multidisciplinary publication. In addition, the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves into a research project or creative activity under the guidance of UC Irvine faculty members. UROP has also collaborated with other units on campus to sponsor undergraduate research programs emphasizing multidisciplinary design, as well as research in biophotonics, health promotion and disease prevention, information technology, cardiovascular research, chemistry, and micro/nano technologies. UROP has recently launched the International Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (I-SURF), which encourages international students to come to the United States to conduct summer research under the guidance of UC Irvine faculty mentors.
Thank you for joining us today. We feel that the presentations, awards, performances and spirit of the day provide an excellent opportunity to share in the “Brilliant Future” these students are beginning to explore. With you, we look forward to their continuing explorations and accomplishments.
