Welcome from UROP
May 20, 2017
Dear UC Irvine Community Members and Guests:
Welcome to the 24th annual UC Irvine Undergraduate Research Symposium, a showcase of the undergraduate students who have committed themselves to faculty-mentored research projects and creative activities. Research is a process of inquiry, and these students have dedicated themselves to asking significant questions and then developing the skills they need to look for answers. Through their research experiences, however, they have discovered that respect, ethics and integrity are also vital to achieving success. Today’s theme, “Undergraduate Research: Excellence through Integrity,” recognizes the critical values these skills hold within the undergraduate research community here at UC Irvine.
Exploring research has become an important part of many students’ education, and this is reflected by the continuing growth of the symposium. This year we are proud to offer 747 presentations, presented by nearly 1,150 students, mentored by more than 450 faculty. The day’s offerings—oral and poster presentations, dance performances, a keynote address, and presentation of the Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Research—demonstrate the passion that drives students to achieve.
Many people have helped make today’s event possible. We congratulate the student presenters, whose dedication has helped carry them through the challenges of their research. We express our deepest thanks to their faculty mentors, whose patient guidance and encouragement have made their students’ achievements possible. Finally, we wish to recognize the many volunteers who have devoted their time and efforts to making the symposium a success.
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) in the Division of Undergraduate Education assists UC Irvine’s students by facilitating and supporting their involvement in faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative activities. As the organizer of today’s symposium, UROP has provided research assistance and funding to many of today’s presenters. UROP also advises undergraduate students about on- and off-campus research opportunities, and publishes The UCI Undergraduate Research Journal, an annual multidisciplinary publication. In addition, the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves into a research project or creative activity under the guidance of UC Irvine faculty members. UROP has also collaborated with other units on campus to sponsor undergraduate research programs emphasizing multidisciplinary design, as well as research in biophotonics, health promotion and disease prevention, information technology, cardiovascular research, chemistry, and micro/nano technologies. UROP has recently launched the International Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (I-SURF), which encourages international students to come to the United States to conduct summer research under the guidance of UC Irvine faculty mentors. As always, UROP is dedicated to pursuing collaborative and innovative opportunities and programs to benefit our students, faculty, and the UCI community.
Thank you for joining us at today’s Symposium. We hope that you are as inspired as we are by our students, who remind us of the success that can be achieved through honing expert knowledge and pursuing a project with passion and integrity. We congratulate them on their achievements and look forward to following their future accomplishments.
