The B-SURP Program will not be offered this Summer. Please check back
for future programs and announcements.
Microbeam and Medical Program’s
(LAMMP) Biophotonics Summer Undergraduate Program (B-SURP) at the Beckman
Laser Institute and Medical Clinic (BLIMC) provides undergraduate
and high school students
with a 9-week immersion experience in Biophotonics, Biomedical
Optics, and Medical Translational Technology.
Under the mentorship of an interdisciplinary group of 21 BLIMC
faculty members from more than ten UCI academic departments, participants
will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of research
projects and are provided instruction and “hands on” training
in biophotonics technologies, translational research, and insight
into future educational and career opportunities.
The participants will be invited to attend the LAMMP Seminar Series
and workshops that provide opportunities to build knowledge about
biophotonics, and biomedical optics. Participants will enjoy presentations
from panels of speakers representing
academia, medicine, industry, and national labs, along with a
tour of the
BLIMC facility. Faculty mentors also host workshops focused on
career development, graduate school, research ethics, and writing
and presentation skills. At the conclusion of the summer program,
participants will present their research accomplishments at the
B-SURP Symposium, which is the capstone of the summer experience.
Participants are further encouraged to pursue future research over
the course of the following academic year.
B-SURP offers a limited number of fellowships that will be awarded
on a competitive basis; the B-SURP Faculty Advisory Committee reviews
all applications and will make final decisions on funding recommendations.
Students receiving adequate funding from departmental or other
sources can submit an application for a B-SURP Honorary Fellowship.
This program is designed to help students fully develop the knowledge
and skills that will propel them into graduate studies or careers
in the fields of biophotonics. Students will receive ongoing support
after the program ends to help them further pursue their research
and career goals.
The Beckman Laser Institute is located at the University of California,
Irvine, in south Orange County, just minutes from the Pacific
Ocean. The facility is also a short drive from mountain resorts,
the desert, several exciting theme parks, sports venues, and concert
The B-SURP program is funded in part by the National Center for
Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health.
