2003 Symposium

The UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium, held on May 10th, was an exciting and enjoyable showcase for undergraduate achievement in all disciplines. The Symposium’s theme, "Research & Policy: Facts or Interpretation," reflected UCI's commitment to promoting an interdisciplinary approach to research and analysis, both within and beyond the academy.

More than 500 students presented their research findings through oral and poster presentations to faculty, staff, members of the UCI and general community, and their families and friends. In addition to the presentations, participants enjoyed dance performances by our undergraduates, lunchtime faculty-led roundtable discussions, the keynote address by Dr. Elizabeth Loftus, Distinguished Professor of Social Ecology, and the presentation of the Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Research to faculty and student recipients from each school. The day reflected UCI’s commitment to faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative projects.

We invite you to join us at next year's Symposium, which will be held on Saturday, May 15th, 2004.

The reaction to the event was overwhelmingly positive and included such comments as:

"It was inspiring and marvelous to watch and participate as a mentor and audience for the excellent presentations. In my opinion, this activity is an important indicator of a great university. As always, it was superbly organized and planned out to the finest detail. On behalf of our students, thank you for making such a day of exchange, stimulation, and celebration possible. Congratulations on another astounding success—you outdo yourself each year." — Faculty

"I want to thank you and your team for the great amount of work that went into making the Symposium an excellent event—it was remarkable. As it was my first time presenting, I was very excited and somewhat nervous. My expectations were surpassed with the excellent presentations, keynote speaker, faculty-led roundtable discussions, easy and helpful registration, and great organization. Furthermore, much of my nervousness passed with the help of the faculty moderator and student room monitor. I wish for all students to have the opportunity to do undergraduate research. My family and invited friends had a great time and found attending the Symposium to be a very rewarding experience. I am honored and proud to have been part of this beautiful UCI tradition. Thank you UROP and UCI!" — Student
